Historical Note
The Faculty Women's Club at Haverford College was active as early as the 1920s. Their 1965 by-laws state that purpose of the club was to "cooperate with the faculty and students in furthering the social life of the College." Membership was open to the wives of faculty and administrators as well as all women who were members of the faculty or administration. Officers in the group included a president, vice president, secretary-treasurer, tea chairman,... coffee hour coordinator, babysitting coordinator and retiring faculty dinner coordinator. The Club was active at least until the mid 1970s.
The Faculty Women's Club coordinated and supported numerous events on campus, including freshman receiptions, advisee entertainments, teas, Campus Day clean up efforts, homecoming, the Haverford-Swarthmore football game, Christmas parties, and student entertainments in faculty homes. Around the 1940s, they were also responsible for managing the entertainment budget for the language houses on campus. The President of the Faculty Women's Club was appointed to the Faculty Housing Committee in 1969. Many of the Club's activities were geared towards supporting faculty families around campus, including running a "furniture pool" of furniture and baby equipment that could be borrowed, running a film series for children, and organizing informal coffee hours for members and their children. In the 1960s, the Faculty Women's Club often sponsored plays and other events to benefit Serendipity Day Camp.
