Identifier: HCR-002

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of the records of the Haverford College Staff Association and includes meeting minutes, memoranda, financial records, governance documents, and other materials created by and collected by the Association. The bulk of the materials in this collection date from the Staff Association's founding in 1971 to the late 1980s.

The collection is divided into seven series. The first series consists of records pertaining to the Staff Association's founding and governance. It includes correspondence with former Haverford College President John Coleman regarding the creation of a staff council, a statement of purpose, by-laws, and other materials describing the Association's mission.

The second series contains materials related to Staff Association General Meetings as well as documents from various internal committees, including the Advisory Committee, Central Committee, and Executive Committee.

The third series consists of materials documenting the Staff Association's interactions with various external committees and organizations. Some of these committees, including the Presidential Search Committee and the College Women Committee, included representatives from the Staff Association. Others, like the Bryn Mawr College Staff Association, pursued issues of interest to the Haverford's Staff Association.

The fourth series contains materials related to projects, programs, and publications undertaken by the Staff Association. These include a job classification study, personnel handbooks, and grievance procedures. The series also includes a small amount of material on campus events sponsored by the Staff Association.

The fifth series consists of materials pertaining to Haverford College's budget and the Staff Association's involvement with budget planning.

The sixth series documents the Staff Association's advocacy for the improvement of staff salaries and benefits.

The final series contains materials showing the Staff Association's involvement with various campus concerns and issues, including parking, safety and security, and unionization.

Biographical / Historical

The Haverford College Staff Association was formed in 1971 and a representative body was established to provide a means for communicating with the College’s administration. The organization of the Association took various forms until 1982, when formal Bylaws were drawn up and adopted. The purpose of the Haverford College Staff Association is to represent the interests of the staff of the College by serving as a formal line of communication among the staff, College leadership, and other College constituencies; fostering a greater sense of shared community among staff members and between all College constituencies; providing a forum for staff discussion of College policies, procedures, and conditions of employment; identifying and presenting staff concerns to College leadership and committees; and providing effective mechanisms through which staff members may participate in decisions that affect them. All Haverford College employees, except faculty and Senior Staff, are Staff Association members.

Initially, the Staff Association had a Chairman aided by an Advisory Committee, but in 1975 this structure was replaced by a Central Committee with no presiding officer which adopted a "consensus" decision policy. Since the early 1980s, the Haverford College Staff Association has been led by an Executive Committee that has general direction of the business and affairs of the Association.

Historically, the Staff Association has taken up issues related to staff salaries and benefits, standards for fair treatment, and grievance procedures.
