Biographical / Historical

Samuel James Gummere was born April 28, 1811 in Rancocas, N.J. to John and Elizabeth (Busby) Gummere. Gummere was a teacher and taught Latin, Greek, and mathematics at the Friends School in Providence, Rhode Island. He was an assistant teacher at Haverford College beginning in 1834. Gummere married twice- he married his first wife, Abigail Griscom, in 1835, and married his second wife, Elizabeth Hooten Barton, in 1845. In 1862, he returned to teach at Haverford College (previously Haverford School), then became president of the college in 1863, a position he held until his death in 1874. He had three children, Caroline E. Gummere, John Gummere, and Francis Barton Gummere. Gummere Hall, built in 1964, was named in his honor.
