Biographical / Historical
William Ambler, class of 1945, was one of the longest serving directors of admissions at Haverford College. He was born in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, as a Quaker. He enrolled at Haverford in 1945, leaving half-way through his studies to join the Civilian Public Service during World War II, and then returning to the College to graduate with a major in Mathematics in 1949. During his tenure as Director of Admissions between 1956 and 1987, Haverford became co-educational, its enrollment more than doubled and the proportion of students of color increased significantly. He was 71 when he died in June 1995. Currently, the William W. Ambler Award is awarded to a student athlete exemplifying high academic standards.
