Biographical Note
William Carvill (1794-1884) was an English gardener and landscape architect, who was hired by Haverford College in 1834 to create a serene campus landscape on what had been farmland for the decades prior. He was also instrumental in introducing cricket to the College, a sport still played today by Haverford students. Carvill was employed by Haverford until its closure in 1845, wherein his contract was terminated. He remained in the Philadelphia area until his death in 1884, reportedly attending a cricket match between Haverford College and the University of Pennsylvania in 1878, at the age of 84.
