John S. Bradway scrapbook

John Saeger Bradway was born in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania on February 17, 1890, to William Bradway and Jennie Saeger. Bradway entered Haverford College in 1907, graduating in 1911. In 1914, he earned a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Bradway then returned to Haverford, earning a master's degree in 1915, for his thesis “Some Forerunners of the Opera.” Bradway practiced law from 1914 to 1917, before enlisting in the U.S. Naval Reserves, serving from May 5, 1917, to March 17, 1919, and eventually reaching the rank of Lieutenant (Junior Grade). He married Mary Henderson on June 11, 1921. Bradway was a member of the Philadelphia Union League, Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity, Order of Foreign Wars of the United States, American Legion, and served as the President of The Savoy Company in 1922. He served as the Chief Counsel of the Bureau of Legal Aid Society, Department of Public Welfare, and the Counsel of the National Association of Legal Aid Societies. Bradway was a Professor of Law at Duke University from 1931 to 1959, where he founded the Duke Legal Aid Clinic in 1931. He served as Professor of Law Emeritus at Duke University from 1959 to 1970, teaching as a Professor at California Western University and the Hastings College. Bradway died on January 2, 1985, in Eureka, California.
