James Tyson diaries

James Tyson was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on October 26, 1841, to Henry Tyson and Gertrude Haviland. He entered the sophomore class at Haverford College in 1857, and graduated, receiving his bachelor's, in 1860. He enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania after graduating from Haverford in 1860, and obtained his M.D. in 1863. He came back to Haverford College as an alumni orator in 1884, and spoke on "The Requirements of a Modern College Education." He received a master's from Haverford in 1865. During his life, Tyson was a member of the American Philosophical Society, fellow at the College of Physicians, member of the American Medical Association, member of the Association of American Physicians, and professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He became Dean of the Medical School in 1888. He was the author of many medical and academic texts, including "The Cell Doctrine; its History and Present Status", "Practical Examination of Urine", and "Handbook of Physical Diagnosis". He also served in the United States Army from 1861 to 1865. James Tyson married Frances Bosdevex on December 5, 1865. He died on February 21, 1919, in Philadelphia.
