Sigmund Spaeth philosophy notes

Sigmund Gottfried Spaeth was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on April 10, 1885, son of Adolph Spaeth and Harriet Reynolds Krauth. He entered Haverford College in 1901 and graduaed in 1905. During his time at Haverford, he was president of his class, editor-in-chief of the Haverfordian, a "Spoon Man," and a member of the Founders' Club. After Haverford, he worked as an instructor of German at Princeton University from 1906 to 1908. He then was a graduate student at Princeton University from 1908 to 1910. He served as the head of the English department at the Ashville School in North Carolina from 1910 to 1912. He served as different types of editors for periodicals including Life, New York Evening Post, New York Times, Boston Evening Transcript, and Opera Magazine. He also worked as a music director, educational director and manager, and music lecturer. He became known as "The Tune Detective" and shared his musical studies through books, lecuters, newspapers, radio, and television. He published "Milton's Knowledge of Music" and "Milton and Music." He contributed to magazines and translated songs and librettos. He was a member of the Nassau Club, Princeton Club, National Arts Club, and Bensonhurst Cricket Club. He married Irene Katharine Lane in 1917 in New York City. He died on November 12, 1965.
