Scope and Contents

This collection contains a volume of autographs compiled by Arthur Haviland during his time at Haverford College. The volume includes signatures and some small photographs of faculty and students at Haverford College between 1860 and 1862. The entries include names, hometowns, the date, and sometimes a short message. In the back of the volume there is a list of all the people who signed the book. There are five photographs in an envelope in the back of the volume, showing groups of Haverford students and one of a building on the campus.

Biographical / Historical

Arthur Haviland was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 8, 1848, the son of Daniel Griffin Haviland and Hannah Quinby. He entered the preparatory department of Haverford College in 1860 and graduated with the class of 1865. He was on the cricket team during his time at Haverford. He went on to be a clerk in mercantile house, a civil engineer, a member of the real estate department at New York City & Hudson River Railraod, Captain of 1st Regiment of Volunteers in the United States Military engineers, and a special assistant engineer in the law department of New York Central Railroad. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He married Mary Ann (Martin) Burt in 1888. He died in New York City on June 18, 1919.
