Biographical Note

Charles Shoemaker Taylor was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on November 26, 1850, the son of Abraham M. Taylor and Elizabeth R. Shoemaker. He entered Haverford College in 1867, and graduated in 1871. At Haverford College he played cricket. He was the vice president of the Alumni Association, a manager of Haverford College from 1876 to 1880, a trustee of Bryn Mawr College until 1893, a member of the Merion Cricket Club in Haverford, Pennsylvania, a life member of the University Club in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and a member of the Haverford College Union. He married Rebecca Hughes in 1873, and had five children: A. Merritt (1874), C. Clifford (1876), Joseph W. (1878), Marianna (1881), and Frederick Raymond (1887). In 1894, he married Gertrude Allinson and had three more children: Margaret Wood (1898), Edward Allinson (1900), and Lawrence Newbold (1903). Charles Shoemaker Taylor died September 21, 1939, in Haverford, Pennsylvania at the age of 89.
