Annals of Haverford
Scope and Contents
This collection contains two copies of the Annals of Haverford, one being the original manuscript verson and the other a typed copy. The Annals was a contemporary account of the history of Haverford College, from its opening through its first four years. It recounts some of the large decisions made by the institution and the programs undertaken. Some of the topics discussed include: the opening of the school, engagements of the students, visits by the managers, lectures and arrangement of the school room, arrangements of the minerals, regulations, Loganian society, the grounds, examinations, and regulations of the studies. The entries are dated, and most of them end with the word "Comes." Some of the entires are in rhyming verse, while most are in prose.

Historical Note
The Annals of Haverford was most likely written by Joseph Walton, who was one of the 21 students who was present on the opening day of Haverford College in 1833. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on August 2, 1817, the son of Joseph Walton and Abi Kite. After leaving Haverford, he was a Latin teacher at Westtown School, and a printer, surveyor, and dealer in furniture. He was also the clerk of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting for 16 years from 1881 to 1897. He was the editor of "The Friend" in Philadelphia from 1879 to 1898. He was also the author and editor of many Quaker books. He married Lydia Lippincott in 1858. He died in New Jersey on February 10, 1898.
