Biographical Note

John W. Spaeth was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Haverford College in 1917. Afterwards, he earned a master's degree from Harvard University, before serving in the US Army as a sergeant in World War I. After the war, he taught at the Haverford School, the Hill School, and the Penn Charter School, before attending Princeton University to acquire a Ph.D. He then moved into higher education teaching, working at Brown University for five years before settling down at Wesleyan University. He spent the remainder of his teaching career there (1930-1966), before transferring into university archiving until 1972. He married Verna Follett and had three children: Margaret, Jane, and John III. He passed away in 1973, in Cromwell, Connecticut.
