These documents created and collected by Rick DeJesús-Rueff pertain to the history of Puerto Rican Students at Haverford (PRSH), the José Padín Puerto Rican Scholarship, and Haverford College's support of Puerto Rican students in the 1970s.

This collection contains information on the José Padín Puerto Rican Scholarship in 1970 and its intended purpose. Padín was a member of the Class of 1907 and eventually became the Secretary of the Department of Education in Puerto Rico. The collection also includes materials from Juan Albino on the history of PRSH and recommendations for approaching Haverford President John Coleman. This material is followed by a more complete history of PRSH by DeJesús-Rueff and Albino. The collection also contains a February 1975 memorandum from PRSH, Asian-American Students at Haverford, and the Black Students League to President John Coleman; a 1975 memo to the director of admissions at Bryn Mawr College; a response to the February 1975 PRSH memo by Jon Copulsky; a May 1975 memorandum to the Student Affairs Committee of the Board of Managers; and an April 1977 statement from the Minorities Coalition.

Biographical / Historical

This collection consists of documents created and collected by Rick DeJesús-Rueff, Class of 1975. DeJesús-Rueff was a member of Puerto Rican Students at Haverford (PRSH), a student group founded in 1969 that advocated for Puerto Rican students and Latinx students more broadly. With Juan Albino, Class of 1972, DeJesús-Rueff wrote a history of PRSH that is included in this collection. With the leaders of Asian-American Students at Haverford and the Black Students League, DeJesús-Rueff petitioned President of Haverford College John Coleman for the establishment of the position of Instructor of English as a Second Language in 1975. DeJesús-Rueff is currently the Academic Director of the First Generation Scholars Program at St. John Fisher College. He was awarded the Haverford College Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award in 2019.
