Biographical / Historical
Allen Clapp Thomas was born in 1846, in Baltimore, Maryland. He entered Haverford in 1861, and graduated in 1865. He was the valedictorian of his class and the alumni poet in 1866. After graduating from Haverford, he was involved with the mercantile, shipping, and commission business from 1865 to 1878. Afterwards, he became a member of Haverford's faculty, first as a prefect from 1878 to 1887, then as a professor of History and Political Science from 1887 to 1893 and finally as professor of History from 1893 to 1912. He also worked as a librarian from 1878 till 1915. He was the Presiding Clerk of Baltimore Yearly Meeting of Friends (Orthodox) from 1897 to 1920 and he died in Haverford, Pennsylvania, in 1920.
