Scope and Contents

This collection contains a variety of letters written by Robert Chapman Smith (Class of 1914). Smith addresses the letters in pen at the end of his typed work. All letters except one are addressed to Charles "Charlie" Rhoades Williams (Class of 1914). One letter about Williams' death is addressed only to his wife, Grace. Some of the other letters are addressed to Grace as well as Williams. In the letters, Smith reminisces on his time at Haverford, musing about Haverford events, activities, and fellow students.

Biographical Note

Robert Chapman Smith (1892-1982) entered Haverford in 1910 and graduated in 1914. He was a member of the Triangle Society. Smith worked as an agent with the Provident Mutual Life Insurance Company. He published two books of reflections on his hometown, In and Around Town and After Many Days. Smith was 1914 Class Agent and regularly wrote brief essays to "Fourteeners" from 1954 to 1980.
