Identifier: HCS-003-145

Scope and Contents

This collection contains letters written by Thomas Herbert Chase while he was a student at Haverford College. Many of the letters are addressed to Anna Linn Bright of Pottsville, Pennsylvania, though some were sent to his sister and others. The letters describe life on Haverford's campus during the 1880s, often relaying anecdotes related to events happening on campus and in the country. Notably, one letter describes a group of Haverford students bringing a calf into Barclay Hall, while another describes the state of mourning on campus and in Philadelphia after the death of President James A. Garfield. Many of the letters contain hand-drawn illustrations, primarily about the content of the letters. The letters are dated from 1879 to 1882.
