Meredith B. Colket Jr., "The Haverfordian 'Whose Equal Our College Never Knew'"
Scope and Contents
This collection contains a single article, dated March, 1975, on a deceased member of the class of 1888 named Edward Morrill Pope. It was written by Meredith B. Colket Jr., a renowned genealogist, based off of documents he received regarding Pope’s life and death. The article begins by providing context for the story, mentioning the small size of the 1888 class and recounting events which occurred during that time. Colket then details the events of Pope’s untimely passing, taking place as a result of blood poisoning after making contact with a rusty nail. He illustrates the various reactions to Pope’s death, including that of the 1888 valedictorian address. At the end Colket lists his source as a folder given to him by the Pope family.
