Biographical / Historical

Butternuts Monthly Meeting was established in 1810, being set off from Duanesburg Monthly Meeting. At first it comprised the Preparative Meetings of Butternuts, Madison, Burlington and Otego. In 1817 Bridgewater Monthly Meeting was set off, taking Brookfield, Madison, Bridgewater and New Hartford Monthly Meetings and Butternuts retaining the Preparative Meetings of Lauren, Butternuts and Burlington. Butternuts Monthly Meeting (Orthodox) reportedly changed its name to Morris Monthly Meeting in 1881, and then to West Laurens Monthly Meeting in 1889. Butternuts Monthly Meeting (Hicksite) changed its name to Laurens Monthly Meeting and was reportedly laid down in 1857, members attached to Duanesburg Monthly Meeting.
