Biographical / Historical

A meeting was established at Westbury before 1671. In 1676 it became a quarterly meeting under New England Yearly Meeting. It became part of New York Yearly Meeting on that body's establishment in 1746. In 1828, the Hicksite branch continued as Westbury Quarterly Meeting; the Orthodox branch changed its name to New York Quarterly Meeting in 1884. The two branches reunified, effective 1957, as New York-Westbury Quarter. In 1974 New York Monthly Meeting became New York Quarterly Meeting; in 1976 the remaining meetings of the former New York-Westbury Quarterly became Long Island Quarterly Meeting. Religious Society of Friends; in 1976 the remaining meetings of the former New York-Westbury Quarterly became Long Island Quarterly Meeting, which body continues to the present day.
