Biographical / Historical
The Witness Section of New York Yearly Meeting "comprises those committees and representatives to Quaker bodies which try to make visible the traditional testimonies and newer concerns of Friends in ways that extend beyond the Society of Friends. Its work attemptes to express beliefs into action. The Witness Coordinating Committee (WCC) functions as an enabling body of this section." (NYYM Handbook, 1998)
The WCC was established in 1977, but was not the first coordinating committee for Quaker outreach activity. A Peace and Social Action Program Steering Committee was established in 1966, uniting the Peace and Service Committee with the Steering Committee for a Peace Action Program. The Hicksite Yearly Meeting appointed a Philanthropic Labor Committee in 1888 to coordinate Friends efforts in Native American Affairs, Temperance, Prison Reform, Education of Colored People, Arbitration, Corrupt Literature, and Tobacco. Quakers at Twentieth Street (Orthodox) established a Bible School and Missionary Board in 1873 to consolidate work among the Freedmen and the encouragement of First Day Schools.
