This collection includes records pre-1828 Separation from the Shrewsbury and Rahway Quarterly Meeting, records from the Orthodox Quarterly Meeting between 1828 and 1857, and records from the Hicksite Quarterly Meeting between 1828 and 1891 when it became a Half-Yearly Meeting.

Biographical / Historical
Shrewsbury and Rahway Quarterly Meeting was established in 1672. In 1828 it divided into Orthodox and Hicksite branches. The Orthodox branch affliiated with Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and was laid down in 1857. In 1891 the Hicksite branch became Shrewsbury and Rahway Half-Yearly Meeting and in 1892 it changed its name to Shrewsbury and Plainfield Half-Yearly Meeting, which body continues to the present day.
A quarterly meeting was established at Shrewsbury in 1672; it became part of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting in 1682. In 1786, the name of the quarterly meeting was changed to Shrewsbury and Rahway Quarterly Meeting. In 1828, it divided into Orthodox and Hicksite branches. Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Orthodox) discontinued Shrewsbury and Rahway Quarterly Meeting in 1857; its members were attached to Burlington Quarterly Meeting (Orthodox).
The Hicksite quarterly meeting was transferred to New York Yearly Meeting (Hicksite) in 1833. In 1892, the Hicksite quarterly meeting became a half-yearly meeting, and in 1893, the name was changed to Shrewsbury and Plainfield Half-Yearly Meeting.

Hicksite and United meeting records transferred from Haviland Records Room by NYYM in 1997; pre-Separation and Orthodox records deposited by Philadelphia Yearly Meeting.
The records of Shrewsbury and Plainfield Quarterly Meeting (Orthodox) were orginally catalogued with Philadelphia Yearly Meeting records, and were moved to New York Yearly Meeting in 2011.
