Biographical / Historical
Monthly Meeting of Friends of Philadelphia for the Western District was established in 1814 by Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting by a division of the Monthly Meeting of Friends of Philadelphia. The territory of this meeting included the north side of Market Street west of 8th Street and the south side of Market Street west of 7th Street, and westward from 7th Street between Market and Walnut Streets.
This meeting remained with the Orthodox Friends after the Separation, but Philadelphia Monthly Meeting (Hicksite) held responsibility for this geographical area.
In 1956, Monthly Meeting of Friends of Philadelphia for the Western District, formerly an Orthodox meeting, merged with Philadelphia Monthly Meeting (Hicksite) to form Central Philadelphia Monthly Meeting. Central Philadelphia Monthly Meeting is currently an active meeting.
This meeting is often referred to as "Philadelphia Monthly Meeting for the Western District" or "Twelfth Street."
