Biographical / Historical
The Committee on Philanthropic Labor of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Hicksite) formed a Economic Order sub committee in the early '30's. In 1937, the Yearly Meeting authorized Representative Committee to establish a separate Social Order committee to cooperate with the corresponding committee of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Orthodox). A Committee on Economic Problems was appointed in 1938 with Clair Wilcox, Economics professor at Swarthmore College, as Chair.
In the ten years of its existence, Economic Problems had a number of sub committees, including Industrial Relations, Community, Economic and Social Research, and a joint sub committee on the visitation of Meetings.
David S. and Mary Richie's program of Weekend Workcamps began in 1940 and was sponsored jointly by the Arch Street group and the American Friends Service Committee. Richie himself was named Executive Secretary of the Committee on Economic Problems in 1944. Three years later, the Committee on Economic Problems and the Social Order Committee (Arch Street) combined their efforts, and in 1948 were finally merged as a joint committee.
