Biographical / Historical
Bella Abzug (1920-1998) was a feminist, lawyer, legislator, and social activist from New York City. Abzug served as a member of the US House of Representatives from 1971-1977. Abzug was known throughout her career as an outspoken supporter of equal rights for women, peace, national housing and health programs, day care centers, and more. Abzug also served as a member of Women Strike for Peace and chairwoman of the House Government Information and Individual Rights subcommittee, which held hearings on illegal domestic spying operations of the CIA, Secret Service, and Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Abzug was also outspoken in her opposition to the Vietnam War, taking part in rallies and demonstrations.
