Biographical / Historical
"Aim: to win Americans as individuals and as a nation to record an unqualitfied rejection of war as a means of settling international disputes." The Anti-Enlistment League was organized to combact enthusiasm for the first World War. Jessie Wallace Hughan and Tracy D. Mygatt were active parties, assisted by Sarah Cleghorn, Fannie Witherspoon, Paul H. Douglas, and Rebecca Shelley. Based in New York City and flourished in 1916. This group was a forerunner to the War Resisters League.
Tracy Mygatt mentioned in the Columbia Oral History intervie with her and Frances Witherspoon that "...when the country was at war, the Department of Justice simply asked for the handing over of the files. Since we had nothing to conceal and were perfectly law abiding, as we saw it, the files went into the Department's possession."
