Biographical / Historical
Institute of Politics; also called the Williamstown Institute of Politics; first envisioned in 1913 by the president of Williams College, Dr. Harry A. Garfield, who planned to assemble each summer a group of scholars of international reputation to deliver courses of lectures, to be held at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts; the summer school was not begun until after World War I, in 1919, when the purpose of the Institute was redefined, to be a forum where world problems would be discussed, and to reach an audience far larger and wider than originally envisioned.
