Biographical / Historical
The Joint Amnesty Committee was composed of the Washington committee and delegates from the American Civil Liberties Union, the Pennsylvania Committee for Political Prisoners, and the Maryland Civil Liberties Committee. The Joint Amnesty Committee picketed in front of the White House to protest the imprisonment of 49 members of the Industrial Workers of the World and four other political prisoners, all of whom had exercised their Constitutionally guaranteed right of free speech in protesting United States involvement in World War I.
