Biographical / Historical
Incorporated in Indiana in 1974 as the Mid-America Center, Inc. "to develop a global perspective in students at all levels of education through the preparation and distribution of curricula or portions thereof, work with educators an school authorities, lectures, public discussion groups.."; its principal office was incorporated as Indianapolis, Indiana; Robert W. Gilmore, William J. Rennert, and Lorraine M. Power, all of New York, were listed as the first Directors; Howard Mehlinger was Secretary of the Corporation. It immediately became known as the Mid-America Center for Global Perspectives in Education, formed to serve Indiana and its four contiguous states; the Lilly Endowment (Indiana) was a major benefactor; James Becker, of the Social Studies Development Center of Indiana University was a major proponent. The name was later changed to Mid-America Program for Global Perspectives in Education.
