Biographical / Historical

Records of the Philadelphia area chapter of Nonviolent Peaceforce, a global non-profit organization headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, with offices in the United States and other countries; Nonviolent Peaceforce is an international group of civilians working together to expand the power and potential of nonviolent peacemaking; NP works to promote and implement unarmed civilian protection as a tool for reducing violence and protecting civilians in situations of violent conflict; David Hartsough (a Quaker peace activist) and Mel Duncan initiated the Nonviolent Peaceforce in 1999 at the Hague Appeal for Peace, and convened it in 2002 at Surajkund, India; the first peace team was deployed in 2003, in Sri Lanka.
