Biographical / Historical
Fenner Brockway: Archibald Fenner Brockway; A. Fenner Brockway; Baron Brockway; born 1888 in Calcutta, India; son and grandson of missionaries; educated in England from the age of four; joined Labour Party in 1908; chairman of British Independent Labour Party; entered the House of Lords in 1964; nine times charged in courts for agitation against war; secretary and chairman of No Conscription Fellowship, chairman of War Resisters' International; served terms in prison and hard labor as a conscientious objector to World War I; lobbied for freedom of the African territories, and for African prisoners of conscience; renounced pacifism to support the Spanish Civil War and World War II, though he continued to support conscientious objectors; founded and active in World Disarmament Campaign; died in 1988.
