Biographical / Historical
Direct Action Committee Against Nuclear War; formed in November 1957 from among active supporters of Harold Steele's attempt to enter the Christmas Island nuclear testing area; its first action was the Easter 1958 London-Aldermaston March, which was organized by several groups with the help of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament executive; in 1959 the Direct Action Committee conducted various campaigns related to the General Election, and made nonviolent attempts to occupy or obstruct missile sites and bases; in 1961, work was begun on its final project, the Polaris Protest. During its existence, the Direct Action Committee Against Nuclear War organized or played an active part in many other antinuclear projects and demonstrations, including picketing, marching, and vigils, and a campaign of tax refusal.
