Formed in 1957, at the invitation of British pacifist Bertrand Russell and Canadian-born, American industrialist Cyrus Eaton, in Pugwash, Nova Scotia, by a group of international scientists, representing varying political and economic opinions; they met to assess the perils to humanity from weapons of mass destruction, particularly nuclear weapons; holds annual conferences and issue publications; Central Office is in London; the Executive Office is in Geneva.
