Historical Note

The Clearing House for Nigeria/Biafra Information was established to provide information about the Nigeria/Biafra War. The organization was headquartered in New York, New York and was in operation from October 1968 to February 1970. The CHNBI collected information, issued information packets and a news bulletin, promoted civilian relief and a cease-fire, and an arms embargo. Because the organization was Catholic-based, they were particularly interested in finding newsclippings and other material on Catholic relief efforts and opinions. This has resulted in a rich gathering of information from Ireland and Great Britain, especially.

Extent

10.5 linear ft. (10.5 linear feet.)

Arrangement

This collection remained in the order in which it was donated until it was processed by the Swarthmore College Peace Collection archivist. The collection had thousands of newsclippings and news articles stored in old binder pages with plastic covers. Many were folded up under the plastic so could not be read without removing the covers. In the end, it was decided to remove all the plastic, and whenever possible, sort the loose clippings and articles by country and by newspaper. The articles from foreign countries are mostly in no order within their respective folders. The U.S. articles are in year order, but are mostly not in order by month or day.
