Carol Cummings and Frank Cummings Papers
Scope and Contents
Includes correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, items related to activities of the Cummings and organizations which they supported, as well as reference/subject files. Of particular note is the box of material from/about the Atlanta Sanctuary Committee. This collection was originally titled the Atlanta Sanctuary Committee Records, which is what Frank Cummings wrote that it comprised when he donated the material to the Peace Collection. However, when the collection was examined in 2015, it was seen that only a portion of the collection was directly related to the Atlanta Sanctuary Committee, and was really more about the Cummings' involvements regarding Central America (and, in particular, sanctuary for refugees). Therefore, the collection's name has been changed to reflect this reality.

Biographical note
Carol and Frank Cummings were a Quaker married couple who were involved in the sanctuary movement for Central American refugees in the 1980s. They were based in Atlanta, Georgia, and members of the Friends Meeting House there. The Cummings helped establish the Atlanta Sanctuary Committee in 1985, under the care of the Social Concerns Committee of the Atlanta Friends Meeting. This organization soon included representatives from other religious communities and provided information about the sanctuary movement and sanctuary of Central American refugees escaping the civil wars in that area of the world.

Arrangement
The first three boxes of this collection document the Cummings' involvements and interests, particularly in regard to the sanctuary movement that arose in the 1980s in response to the flood of refugees fleeing the war in Central America. The other seven boxes are filled with reference material that the Cummings' gathered on sanctuary and on Central America, primarily.
