Historical Note
Dorothea Eleanor Woods was born in 1925 in Rochester, New York. She was a member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quaker). Woods received a Ph.D. from University of Illinois in 1957 in French. She joined World YWCA that year and worked for a decade in the development of youth and adult education programs. In the 1970s she pioneered work about child soldiers, researching and writing extensively on this topic. Woods was later affiliated with the Quaker United Nations Office in Geneva, Switzerland, for whom she wrote monthly child soldier updates and which the QUNO distributed to individuals and organizations. Woods died on December 4, 2001 in Wolcott, New York.
