Scope and Contents
This collection contains the personal papers of Lynne Shivers and her work from roughly the 1960s onward. It includes biographical and family material, material on her peace work in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, journals she kept from the 1960s until 2014, and information about her teaching career. This collection also includes correspondence to and from Lynne Shivers and literature she collected out of personal interest. Files concerning Shivers's work with Movement for a New Society may be found in that collection in the Peace Collection.

Biographical
Born in Camden, New Jersey on June 21, 1941, Lynne Shivers was an advocate of peace throughout her life until her death on February 3, 2015. She was a founding member of Movement for a New Society and its Philadelphia Life Center, through which she did work for social change, with an emphasis given to peace and nonviolence. She traveled for peace work often, to Iran and Northern Ireland and eventually to Japan, where her work led her to become director of Hiroshima's World Friendship Center in 1986. She also worked for the American Friends Service Committee on issues of Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. She wrote about social issues and peace activism both for Movement for a New Society publications and for outside publications. In 1979, she began teaching American and English Literature at the Community College of Philadelphia's, where she incorporated literature about peace and nonviolence into her curriculum. She retired from her Assistant Professor position in 2005 and lived the rest of her life in Germantown, Pennsylvania.

Overview
Enid Lynne Shivers was a peace activist and prominent member of Movement for a New Society, for which she organized and wrote informational materials. This collection of her personal materials is primarily composed of journals dating from the 1960s until 2014 and materials from time she spent doing peace work in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
