Robert Hood Papers

Robert Davis Hood (November 11, 1916 - July 24, 1994) was born and raised in Pittsburg, Kansas. Hood earned a B.A. from the University of Kansas in 1941 and an M.A. in Educational Psychology from Kansas State University in 1963; he additionally attended Garett Theological Seminary. Hood became a conscientious objector after being drafted during World War II and joined Civilian Public Service from 1942 to 1946. As part of CPS, he worked at the Philadelphia State Hospital at Byberry for two years. He was at that time also an active member of the Universal Fellowship of Love. Hood married Margaret McCoy in 1942 and then Barbara Ellerbeck in 1957, and had three sons and one daughter. His son John Hood was also a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War. He primarily worked as an educator and counselor, both in the United States and New Zealand. Hood taught at Wesley College in Auckland, New Zealand, and later worked extensively as a counselor in various high schools in Salt Lake City. He also served as director of the Wesley Foundation, a Methodist organization.
