Abstract

This collection consists of broadsides and and other printed materials relating to the Society of Friends (Quakers). Some of the items in the collection are composed of a single, unfolded sheet with printing on only one side. Many others, however, are multiple pages and smaller sizes. Topics of the broadsides include: exhortations by Quakers against the slave trade; testimonials regarding deceased Friends; petitions to government authorities for recognition of various Quaker testimonies, including conscientious objection to war and refusal to take oaths; advice and caution to Quakers regarding their conduct of life; and theological arguments both within the Society of Friends and regarding other religions.

Materials are physically sorted into three size categories: regular boxes, large boxes, and map case (flat file drawer). Within these categories, the broadsides are in alphabetical order by creator.

Materials were collected at various times from various sources by Friends Historical Library staff.

Processing Information

Broadsides are individually cataloged in Tripod. Circa 2009, all Broadsides were digitized. In 2024, most Broadsides were removed from the oversized flat file (map case) drawers where they were previously stored, and moved to flat and oversized flat boxes. Boxes are stored with MSS collections.
