William H. Gillingham sheet music album
Scope and Contents
This is a bound album containing 50 pieces of sheet music owned by Dr. Gillingham. It includes several pieces by Philadelphia doctors and lawyers as amateur composers or lyracists, some dedicated to other professional elites. The album was passed on to his daughter, Kate (Katherine), who added her name to the cover of the album.

Biographical / Historical
Dr. William Heyward Gillingham (1797-1863) was a Pennsylvania Quaker obstetrician. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, he briefly lived in Canton, China and India before establishing a successful medical practice in Kennett Square, Chester County and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1832, he transferred his membership from Kennett Square Monthly Meeting to Philadelphia Monthly Meeting (Cherry Street). He had a love of music that was inherited by his daughter, Kate (Katherine) S. Gillingham.
