Ella Kent Barnard was born in 1853, the only daughter of Mary Anna Kent and John Barnard. She was a Quaker and the author of three books: Daniel Kent, Emigrant, The Maulsby Genealogy, and Dorothy Payne, Quakeress. The Maulsby family were Pennsylvania Quakers, based at least for a time in Plymouth.
