Morrell Family Album
Scope and Contents
This large bound album contains late 19th century photographs of the family of Alfred S. Morrell of N. Berwick, ME, with other family members and other New England Friends. The album holds both cabinet cards and cartes de visite and some tintypes. However, the album is only partially full, and many of the photographs' subjects are unidentified.

Biographical / Historical
The Morrell family geneology can be traced to John Morrell (1640-1723), who settled in Maine circa 1676, and married Sarah Hudson. John Morrell claimed shares of Kittery, Maine, and expanded his family's ownership of the area that is now the town of North Berwick. John Morrell Jr. built a large house in Kittery Common known as the Morrell-Sherbourne house and which stands as an example of mid-18th century archectiture in Southwestern Maine. John Morrell was the first in his family to join the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers).

Overview
This collection consists of a large family album of tintypes, cabinet cards, and cartes de visite depicting members of the Morrell family. The Morrell family was a prominent land-holding family in Kittery and North Berwick, Maine. John Morrell settled the area circa 1676 and was a Quaker at a time when Friends were persecuted; nevertheless, he and his descendents continued their association with the Society of Friends.

The photographs are arranged in the album in no specific order. The Morrell family name appears more frequently in the first pages of the album, with prominent Morrell members at the forefront, but there is no other particular arrangement.
