Scope and Contents

The collection contains materials which descended in the family of Daniel Wood (1729-1773), Quakers of Bristol, Massachusetts, and New York State. It includes family bibles with annotations, an essay book kept by Adelaide Hallock Wood when a student at the Oakwood School, genealogical research on the Wood and Hallock families, transcripts, notes, and a small number of family photographs.

Biographical / Historical

Daniel Wood (1729-1773) was descended from John and Margaret Wood who emigrated to America in 1635. The family first settled in Rhode Island and then Bristol, Massachusetts, where Daniel Wood married Susanna Chase. A son, Stephen Wood (1756-1773) was received at Nine Partners Monthly Meeting, New York, on certificate of transfer from Westport (Acoaxet) Meeting in 1797. In 1875, a great-grandson, Charles Henry Wood married Adelaide Hallock (1846-1899), daughter of George Hallock and Sarah Birdsall Hallock, under the care of Milton Monthly Meeting. Adelaide studied and taught at Friends Boarding School (Oakwood School), Union Springs, New York, and was recorded as a minister by Farmington Monthly Meeting in 1876.
