Malin Family Papers
Scope and Contents
The collection is largely composed of financial, legal and real estate documents relating to the Malin property in Upper Providence, Delaware County (previously part of Chester County), Pennsylvania. Randall Malin of Cheshire, England, purchased 250 acres from William Penn in 1681. The bulk of the papers are related to the tenure of William Malin (1727-1803). Son Abner Malin (1752-1848) married Rachel Ogden in 1803 and was disowned by Chester Monthly Meeting in 1805. Other papers concern their son Stephen Ogden Malin (1806-1892) who continued to farm the property, family estate papers, and a small number of letters received by Rachel Ogden Malin.

Biographical / Historical
Randall Malin of Cheshire, England, purchased 250 acres from William Penn in 1681. In 1682 he settled on the property which remained in the family for over 200 years. Malin [variously spelled MellinMelin] was active in the Society of Friends and acknowledged as a minister. In 1703 he deeded 150 acres to eldest son Isaac Malin and subsequently the remainder to son Jacob. Jacob Malin (1686-1727) was a birthright member of Chester Monthly Meeting. He married Susanna Jones in 1710 under the care of Chester Monthly Meeting and was disowned in 1717 for selling spirits. His son William Malin (1727-1803) married Elizabeth Crosley at Christ Church in 1747, but acknowledged and retained membership in Chester Monthly Meeting. He subsequently served in the militia 1783-1790.
Son Abner Malin (1752-1848) married Rachel Ogden in 1803. Rachel (1782-1869) was the daughter of Aaron Ogden and Esther Preston of Chester Monthly Meeting and a descendant of David Ogden who came to America in 1682 on The Welcome. Abner Malin was disowned by Chester Monthly Meeting in 1805. Their son, Stephen O. Malin (1806-1892), inherited the greater part of their estate. Their granddaughter Rachel Hipple Malin married Andrew Walker McClure.

Custodial History
Gift of Media Historical Commission, delivered by Adam Levine. Much of collection concerns William Malin and family's property in Upper Providence, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The property descended from William's son Abner who married Rachel Ogden to Stephen Ogden Malin. Stephen O. Malin married Caroline Hipple, and their granddaughter Rachel Hipple Malin married Andrew Walker McClure in 1921. Rachel and Andrew McClure had two daughters, Carrie and Kate. Carrie maried J. Morgan Wood; an undated inventory indicates the papers were given to the Borough of Media by Helen Wood.

Separated Materials
McClure family papers were included in the gift. Consisting of a family bible, genealogical research on the Edwards family, and photographs, they were returned to the donor in 2023.
Processing Information
The papers were received in no apparent order and were arranged chronologically by FHL staff. They are stored in two boxes, determined by size.
