Biographical / Historical

In 1968 a Black Studies Committee was formed at Swarthmore College. The committee was made up of faculty and students their goal was to design a student lead course of study for a Black Studies concentration while petitioning Swarthmore College to form an official Black Studies Program. In 1969 four students, Marilyn Allman (Maye), Harold Buchanan, Jannette Domingo, Michael Graves, and Marilyn Holifield, graduated with concentrations in Black Studies. In 1970 the Black Studies Program was officially approved by the college and Dr. Clement Cottingham, Jr. was appointed to be its first director. The foundation of an official Black Studies Program allowed multiple new classes to be offered including Black Literature, Economics of the Black Community, a two-semester course on Afro-American History, Politics of the Urban Ghetto, Black Theology, and African Modernization.
