John Carter family correspondence
Abstract
This correspondence is among members of the Carter family. Letters mostly concern family news. One letter from John to Sarah in 1858 concerns an editorial in The Friend, a Quaker periodical, and the general feeling at that time concerning Friends in London.

Biographical / Historical
John Carter was a birthright Quaker, born in 1800 to John and Rebecca Carter of Deer Creek Monthly Meeting in Maryland. In 1834 he married Sarah Shoemaker, daughter of Nathan and Sarah Shoemaker of Philadelphia. They were members of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting for the Southern District and had ten children. John Carter died in 1877.
