Biographical / Historical

The Vipont, Brown, and Crowley families were active Quakers in England and were particularly involved in Mount Street Meeting. Susan Vipont Hartshorne is the Director of Manchester Crematorium in England. She was born in 1935, daughter of Cedric Vipont Brown and E. Mary (Adams) Brown. Cedric Vipont Brown, born in 1896, volunteered with the Friends Ambulance Unit during World War I; he worked as a doctor for the rest of his life. S. Edward Vipont Brown and Dorothy (Crowley) Brown married in 1926. (Ellis) Mary Adams died in 1972. Elfrida Vipont (Brown) was born in 1902, the daughter of Edward Vipont and Dorothy Brown. She married R. Percy Foulds in 1926. Dorothy Brown was born in 1874, the daughter of Alfred and Mary Catherine (Crafton) Crowley. She married Edward Vipont Brown in 1895, and died in 1968. Edward Vipont Brown was a doctor, involved with the Liberal Party. He was born in 1863. S. Charles and Emily (Spence) Brown married in 1895. Dorothy Crowley died in 1955. Emily (Spencer) Brown was born in 1827, the daughter of John and Deborah Spence. She married Charles Brown in 1852, and died in 1903. Robert Spence worked initially as a partner in a wool and linen drapery business and then worked with a banking company. He was born in 1784, the son of Robert and Sarah (Walker) Spence and was married in 1810 to Mary Foster. Mary Catherine (Crafton) Crowley worked with the Peace Association. She was born 1834, the daughter of Ralph Caldwell and Edith Crafton; she married Alfred Cromley in 1861 and died in 1912.
