Biographical / Historical
Mary Birckhead is a Quaker, often attending Sandy Spring Monthly Meeting in Maryland. She was born ca. 1914-5, and spent her life as an artist and a poet. She taught art classes, wrote and illustrated children's books, worked at Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve, and met with fellow poets, dramatists, and musicians on a regular basis. She occasionally wrote under the pseudonym "Babby." She retired at Friends House.

Ownership and Custodial History
Most of the material was originally given to Martha Nesbitt by Mary Birckhead. Martha Nesbitt urged her to supplement it as a gift to the Friends Historical Library. It was brought in by Joy Shotts, Sandy Spring representative to Baltimore Yearly Meeting Records Committee.
