Biographical / Historical

Emmor Roberts (1831-1908) was a birthright member of Moorestown Monthly Meeting, N.J., the son of Asa and Anna (Lippincott) Roberts. In 1857 he married Martha Lippincott. A farmer by occupation, he served on the Board of Managers of Swarthmore College from 1877-1908. His son, Israel (1858-1916), graduated from Swarthmore College in 1878.

Abstract

Collection of typed transcribed letters written by Emmor Robert, New Jersey Quaker farmer, to his son, Israel Roberts, a student at Swarthmore College, Class of 1878. Contains descriptions of daily life on the farm, family and Quaker local news.

Custodial History

The donor, Alice Roberts Way Waddington, is the great-granddaughter of Emmor Roberts. Her mother, Edith Roberts Williams, Swarthmore College Class of 1914, married Daniel Herbert Way, S.C. Class of 1916. Edith was the daughter of Alice Roberts who married John J. Williams under the care of Moorestown Monthly Meeting in 1885. Alice R. Williams was the younger sister of Israel Roberts and daughter of Emmor and Martha Roberts.

The transcriptions were part of a donation of Swarthmore College publications. The yearbooks and other ephemera were added to RG6, College Archives. Two letters from Elias Hicks, presumably of London Grove (1821-1873), to Sarah M. Gawthrop, the grandmother of D. Henry Way regarding books processed as Misc. Manuscript.
