Abstract This collection contains over 240 mainly incoming manuscript letters addressed to Thomas Evans, a Philadelphia druggist, author, editor, Orthodox Quaker minister of Philadelphia and, in 1833, one the founders of Haverford College. The letters, 1823-1859, contain material on his very active role in the Society of Friends and the problems of religious doctrine before and during the Hicksite and Wilburite schisms within the Quaker faith. Abstract

This collection contains letters and other manuscripts relating to visits of English Friends to America in the 1820s and the controversies which led to the Hicksite-Orthodox Separation. Also included are letters from Elizabeth Rathbone, Liverpool, England, to "My Beloved Uncle;" Joseph Bringhurst, Philadelphia, to "My Esteemed Friend;" also Abel Thomas to Thomas and Mary Wistar (copy) as well as some miscellaneous Quaker papers.

This collection includes three volumes of letters, copied by Jane Stokes. These include letters sent and received by Jane Stokes and her sister (?) Sarah, primarily among female friends and of a personal nature. Also copied are two letters of John Comly, on the subject of Quaker conduct of life.

Members of the Charles and Priscilla Townsend family were active in the Society of Friends in Philadelphia and in Quaker concerns, especially penal reform, abolition, and the natural sciences. The collection includes journals, correspondence, and writings in addition to transcripts and reference material on family members. Much of the material is available in published form.

Abstract Primarily manuscript letters addressed to Hannah Wilson of Plymouth Meeting, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, a member of Gwynedd Monthly Meeting. Most of the correspondents were family and friends of the Wilson, Schofield, and Williams families. The letters contain family news with reference to social and political concerns including slavery and abolition. The letters were transcribed and published with annotations.
