Abstract

The principal creators in the collection are Quakers William Warder Cadbury (1877-1959) and Catharine Jones Cadbury (1884-1970) who spent most of their lives in China. William Warder Cadbury came to China as a medical missionary in 1909.

Abstract

Barron H. Lerner's undergraduate thesis, entitled "The University of Pennsylvania in China: Medical Missionary Work, 1905-1914," includes chapters on: the student volunteer movement, the motivations of the Christian Association volunteers, the historical evolution of the university medical school (1905-1913), the missionaries entrance into Chinese society: hospital and religious work, the demise of the university medical school, and the legacy of the Christian association's work.
